Most people don't worry about protection for their teeth during exercise or sports activities. They make sure they wear the necessary pads, tape weak ankles or wrists, and the coaches make sure the football players insert a mouthpiece as part of their "defense," but that is not enough to protect teeth and jaws.
An avid sports enthusiast himself, Dr. Rutley has the expertise for managing traumatic dental injuries and restoring the athlete's healthy smile. One service Dr. Rutley is dedicated to is custom mouth guard protection for his patients, young and old alike. Any one involved in any kind of sport activity needs to be protected from mouth injury.
Baseball, softball, running, biking, roller blades, skateboarding, basketball, wrestling, karate, football, racquetball, exercising, in fact, all sports should require a custom mouthguard. A blow to the jaw can actually cause a concussion, as well as loosen teeth. It can also cause permanent damage to the TMJ area of the jaw joint, sometimes leading to problems for life.
The custom mouthguard is lightweight and enables the athlete to speak clearly and perform actively with the best possible protection. In addition, it protects the TMJ area and reduces trauma, even from clenching the jaw during performances. Perhaps the best point is that the custom mouthguard is not expensive, certainly not when comparing the cost of treating a painful dental injury later on.
Not many people are aware that teeth knocked out in an accident or sporting mishap can be saved. Dental technology has advanced to the point where they can be implanted back in the mouth with the proper care. In an emergency situation, timing and proper handling of the tooth is very important. A special container called TPS (Tooth Preserving System) should be a part of any family, coach or fitness center's first aid kit. The TPS container maintains the life of the cells in the tooth root, keeping them from drying out or being crushed. The container is labeled with Dr. Rutley's name so that he can be contacted immediately when the patient is taken to a dental office or hospital emergency room. In many cases, Dr. Rutley is able to successfully replace the tooth! This was impossible a few years ago.
